The Why Not Gallery მოხარულია წარმოგიდგინოთ ლუკ ბარტონის პირველი პერსონალური გამოფენა Father Tongue. გამოფენა მოიცავს მხატვრის ნამუშევრებს ქაღალდზე და მინანქარზე, თითოეული ზედმიწევნით დამუშავებული და პირადი სიმბოლიზმით გაჟღენთილი.
ბარტონის მხატვრულ შემოქმედებას ახასიათებს რთული ორნამენტები და სასიამოვნო განწყობა. თავისი ოსტატური კომპოზიციების საშუალებით მხატვარი ქმნის ცნობების და შთაგონების გობელენს, რის შედეგადაც წარმოიქმნება ვიზუალურად რთული ნამუშევრები, რომლებიც ხშირად ღრმა ფიქრის საშუალებას იძლევა.

The Why Not Gallery is glad to present Luke Burton’s first solo exhibition in Georgia - Father Tongue. The exhibition is comprised of the artist’s works on paper and enamel pieces, each meticulously crafted and infused with personal symbolism.
Burton's artistic creations are characterised by intricate patterns and a delightful sense of playfulness. Through his masterful compositions, the artist weaves together a tapestry of references and inspirations, resulting in visually complex artworks that invite profound contemplation.
Central to the showcased paintings are grapes, a recurring motif in Burton's oeuvre. In the context of Georgia, these grapes evoke a myriad of associations and take on a life of their own within the artist's canvases. Some grapes grow into fantastical, almost baroque shapes, while others morph into letters and words. This unconventional transformation reflects Burton's fascination with classical symbols and their enduring evolution across time and diverse contexts.
Delving into the rich historical and symbolic significance of grapes, Burton explores their dual nature as both divine and anarchic, excessive and sacred. ‘The symbols of transgression also being a contemporary symbol of regression,’ explains the artist. This interplay of meaning and meaninglessness becomes even more pronounced as the grape shapes transform into letters, unfinished words, or gibberish sentences.
Burton's paintings offer a playful reflection on the history of the painting medium itself. Each artwork incorporates elements from various genres, ranging from still life to portraiture and landscapes. The landscapes, acting as spaces between places, frame the compositions and acquire ornamental qualities. They playfully misbehave, defying their own rules by intruding into the central parts of the paintings like wandering ornamental meanders.
Furthermore, the artist's technical prowess shines through in his portrayal of simplified landscapes juxtaposed with stylised grapes and somewhat realistic portraits. Each painting features at least one portrait, all depicting white males who embody the dominance of patriarchy. Described by Burton as "judges of different kinds," these historical figures encompass legal judges, boxing and football referees, literary and art critics, and even a wine judge. Placed within postcard-sized boxes amidst playful chaos, the portraits question the notions of decision-making, of dictating standards and the concepts of fame and anonymity. "Their individuality is felt in the realism of the images, but they are also replaceable with another portrait," muses the artist.
"Father Tongue" serves as a captivating exploration of symbolism, history, and the interplay between genres within the realm of painting. Luke Burton's thought-provoking exhibition invites viewers to embark on a visual journey that challenges perceptions and invites contemplation on power, authority, and the fluid nature of artistic expression.
