The Why Not Gallery brings Tibatve’s works to NADA Miami!

We present a vividly coloured world that confronts the difficulties of self-discovery, especially for those who grew up in an Orthodox environment. Vibrant colour schemes and an array of characters evoke memories of animation, particularly the aesthetics of Soviet cartoons, creating a fun and whimsical atmosphere that is depicted with grotesque and surreal imagery.

Tibatve’s fantastic characters are in search of their sexuality. Their forms are modified and exaggerated, and are in a constant state of flux. The seemingly childlike aesthetics of the works represent a deep study of adult themes. The characters engage in activities that are both entertaining and grotesque, hinting at the messy and often uncomfortable
reality of sexual exploration.

In Tibatve’s paintings and sculptures, a range of symbolism, especially religious and mythological, can be seen beneath the vivid colours and abundant imagery. Brought up in post-Soviet Georgia during the period of religious revival, this symbolism has an important meaning for the artist, it represents visual memories buried in his subconscious; Symbols and motifs that shaped society and created new identities.

The works presented at the booth seem to be a manifestation of the artist’s subconscious, these are actions that take place in the room-like structures, somewhere between reality and fantasy, the imagined and felt, fleeting and concrete, recounting untold stories nestled deep within the recesses of the mind.
